Parker's Special Day | Brenham Birthday Party Photographer

One year ago on October 13, 2010, Justin and Suzanne started a new chapter in their lives. One that would forever change their outlook on the world and would show them what it really means to love a child. Over the past year, I have had the distinct honor of photographing their budding family. I was overjoyed when Suzanne asked me to photograph Parker's 1st Birthday Party earlier this month!

Suzanne went all out and took care of every detail. This woman amazes me - she was able to pull together this party all while finishing her graduate degree, working as a teacher, being a wife and a MOM....I nominate you Super Woman!

Lots of friends and family took part in Parker's special day and enjoyed the fun activities....

When the time finally came for the birthday boy to blow out his candles, he knew exactly how to dig in to his birthday cake. YUM!

Happy Birthday Parker and congratulations to Justin and Suzanne for surviving your first year as parents! Thanks again for letting me be a part of your special day :)

2011 Merry + Bright Holiday Sessions | Brenham, TX Family Photographer

I don't know about y'all, but these years just keep sneaking by faster every year. I can't believe that we've got less than 100 days left before the fat man squeezes down the chimney! And being the procrastinator that I am - I'm just now getting my act together with the 2011 Holiday Sessions.....so better late than never...here you go!

Sessions will be VERY limited this year as I have a million things in my schedule right now. The sessions will be in the evening starting at 5:15 pm and only 3 spots will be available each evening....

The dates available are:

Saturday, October 22 & Sunday, October 23
Friday, November 4 & Saturday, November 5

Exact locations are still to be determined, but they will most likely take place in either Brenham or Industry and within 25 miles of 78940.

I will have new holiday card selections this year, as well as the selections from 2010 to choose from. The new card selections will be posted in the next couple of days.

Living in a small town is something I'm really starting to love. We've been in Shelby for a year and a half now and we get to enjoy the simple things in life. Weekends usually consist of a church or fireman's feast that helps to benefit the church or community. The food is always delicious and plentiful, there are games for the kids and above all else, there's fellowship. Now that we've been attending these functions for so long, we have started to get to know more people and we feel as though we belong there now - instead of being some visitor.

Over the summer we attended the Carmine VFD Feast, which serves the best fried chicken you've ever tasted....besides, of course, the Shelby fried chicken that you can get each year at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church fundraiser on October 21st...just sayin!

Anyway, so at the Carmine VFD Feast I ran into my past clients, Suzanne and Justin, and I was so excited when they asked if I would be available to take pictures of their son Parker who is turning ONE this month! Suzanne is one of the best clients you could ask for. She has lots of great ideas, brings props, dresses her family really cute - you get the idea - she rocks!

So a couple of weeks ago, I got to take pictures of this little cutie ....what a difference a year makes!

Since I posted my new pricing and collections last month, I've had several inquiries about the brag book that is included in Collection II. You're turning ONE little guy! | Industry, TX Child Photography

This little guy and his big sister made my job easy.

We met early at 8am last Saturday in Industry and both kiddos were in a great mood. Note to parent's: if you have little ones - the BEST time to schedule their photo session is early in the morning when they've had a lot of rest. They are fresh and ready for the day!

You see, he is turning the big O-N-E. His mom contacted me a couple of weeks ago about doing a photo session and I was so excited when she told me about some of the props she wanted to use - I LOVE it when clients bring in special items for the session. You see, it not only makes for totally unique images, but the pictures end up meaning so much more to client. This cutie is having a 1940's birthday party theme and mom wanted to include dad's Aggie Band hat ....so adorable!

When I knew that his big sister was going to be part of some of the pictures, I had a picture in my mind for this and I wanted to create it.....so I brought a blanket and asked mom to bring some favorite toys and books....and this was my vision that came to life.

And last but not least, I had to capture big sister ....she's such a beauty, inside & out.

When we moved to Shelby last year, Addyson had to do a lot of adjusting to her new school, new teachers and new classmates. But kids are very resilient and before long she had made some great friends. One of her most dear friends was new to Brenham too - they were newbies - together! When Addyson found out that her friend Emmie's 4th birthday party was coming up in June, she was very excited to attend!

I was even more excited and delighted to have been asked to photograph Emmie's special day. The day was perfect and couldn't have been held in a better location - Fireman's Park. You see, they have a darling antique carousel! The party theme was built around the carousel and it could not have been any more perfect.

Lessons from a 4 year old + a Mother's Day Giveaway! Brenham, TX Photography

It’s 4am and I’m up writing a blog post. About 8 months ago, I dreaded being up this early getting ready to endure the long commute to a job that sucked the soul out of me. But now, I’m still up at 4am – however, it’s for a much different reason. I haven’t gotten a lot of sleep tonight. After letting the dog out at 2am, I couldn’t go back to sleep, so I figured I would watch the DVR’d episode of Brothers & Sisters that I’ve been so looking forward to. You know, I have loved that show since the very first episode. As dysfunctional as they all are, they always seem to overcome the issues or figure out how to heal. Granted, I know their life isn’t real; it’s made up by some writers sitting in a big conference room. However, I feel like the writers have really found a storyline that obviously connects with me and many other viewers. Last night’s episode really evoked emotion in me. I don’t know if it’s because I’m delirious from the lack of sleep, but it really hit home with me. It talked about mothers. Mothers that try so hard to be perfect or try to mold their kids to be perfect – and how doing this can actually drive us apart and make us less than perfect. Weren’t we all created just how we are supposed to be?

As I’ve laid in bed trying to go back to sleep, the thoughts keep rolling through my head about how I try to teach Addyson right from wrong and it's come clear to me that most of the time I’m stifling her from being who she is. Why? I don’t know…maybe I’m trying to protect her from getting hurt… but isn’t that what all mothers are trying to do? But I think that sometimes getting hurt and being able to live through it is how we learn our biggest lessons…not just for our children – but for us. I think that there’s so much I can learn from my 4 year old. How to laugh and act silly, how to ask a 1000 questions, how not be afraid to show people how we feel and to be honest. I’m reminded of a dance that we attended about a month ago that was hosted by my in-laws. Addyson was excited to go because she’s become very good friends with everyone in our small little town. When we walked in, she saw her friend Katie from across the room and ran full speed ahead to the table she was sitting at to give her a huge hug. Katie was extremely startled because she was in mid conversation with her friends and probably wasn’t anticipating this type of greeting at a dance. After this happened we told Addyson that she shouldn’t do that – she shouldn’t have greeted Katie with so much excitement. Because you see, Katie is very elderly and Addyson could have knocked her over if she was standing or have caused her to have a heart attack – at least that’s what Brad and I thought. But it didn’t occur to me until this evening that we were teaching our daughter to hide her emotions – and that was a mistake. And if I think about this even further – Addyson probably actually made Katie’s day. Katie is a widow and lives all alone. She doesn’t have any children and Addyson has become very fond of her and always makes a point to excitedly greet her when she sees her around town – and each time it brings a huge smile to Katie’s face. So maybe it’s time for me to learn a few lessons from Addyson.

Now I feel compelled to makes things right and start changing my approach to being a mom. I’m making a promise to let my child be the person she was made to be – and guiding her to do the right thing instead of making her do things the way I think they should be done. And this is the first lesson that she taught me - that I wanted to be a photographer. My very first photo shoot when she was just 2 weeks old

Tuesday Confessional

Okay, so you don't have to tell me.... once again it's NOT morning. I know, I know, I think I have issues posting this Tuesday segment in the morning. So from here forward, I'm just going to call this the Tuesday Confessional. I can't handle the pressure I tell you! So enough of all that - on to the "confession" part of this.

So I'm a photographer right? I'm all about helping families CREATE their history - well, I'm slacking with my family...bad. My kid is over the top in the personality category and it needs to be documented...seriously! So when she wonders why I have to be committed in a few years, she'll have the proof in pictures. I'm joking about being committed, but she certainly gives me and her dad a run for our money. Who would have thought our lives would be so exciting. Take a look for yourself:

Her sense of style is over the top! Not sure where she got that from, but I think it must date back to her days as an infant when her dad would dress her in floral onesies and striped pants...no, I'm not joking...I think he called it Hobo Chic!

Maybe it's my fault because I'm always asking her to pose for photos, but I think I've created a monster!

This is a little secret - I like to wear this headband when she's not around....I love it :) She does not like to share!

She loves animals and we're thankful that our cat is desperate enough to let anyone hold him, not matter how contorted he is

When I found out I was having a little girl, I admit, I was a little disappointed. All the weird pregnancy dreams that I had all had me convinced I was having a boy. I didn't think I would like having a girl, but she proved this momma wrong! I love how girly she is - from her princess heels to her sassy purses...she's pure sweetness and I wouldn't have it any other way. That's my Tooty!

Tuesday Morning Confessional

If you didn't already know it, I'm a little strange. You see, more often than not, I'll wake up at 4am or so and start working because I'll wake up with thoughts and ideas rushing through my brain. And I can't go back to sleep or get them out of my head unless I take action.

Well, this morning was one of those mornings. I woke up at about 4:15am pondering some ideas for my upcoming Senior Model Program and I hopped out of bed and went straight to the computer to check my email. In my inbox was an email that I usually disregard and send to the trash box - but this morning I actually glanced at it.

Let me take you on a little rabbit chase. (in non-hillbilly speak, that means tangent)

You see, my husband has a really neat cousin, Bobbi Jo. You may remember her from my recent post about her son Brazos' 1st Birthday. When Brad and I moved to Shelby last May, she so graciously invited me to attend a MOPS meeting with her. MOPS, you ask? Mothers of PreSchoolers. It was at a local church in Brenham and I was super excited to meet other moms in the area since I had just moved here. I loved the meeting and interacting with the other moms. I even signed up to become a member and receive their newsletter. However, that was the first and last meeting I ever went to. For whatever reason, everytime there is a meeting I have something else going on and I haven't had a chance to make it back.

Now, back to 4:15 this morning

I just so happened to open the email - and the front newsletter story was "The Case for Messy". Well, I'm messy...so that may have been why I decided to read it. And am I glad I did! It was a story about a mom of 2 that felt terrible after visiting her younger sister at her newly renovated home where everything was spotless and in order and then stepping foot into her home that had been taken over by her ankle-biters. She then goes on to say that for several days she cleaned her own house from top to bottom, and totally exhausting herself, just to have her toddler press his nose against the window and leave a smear. She ended in saying that she remembered why she let her housekeeping go to the wayside; because spending time with her family and friends was what she wanted to use up her energy on - not keeping the house perfect.

So, you're probably saying, where does your confession play into this long-winded story? Well, I am also guilty of feeling like I should to more housework, and feel bad when toys are all over the house or the bed isn't made. I am so glad that I took the time to read this email because it made me feel like I'm not so terrible after all. And it makes me feel better having a messy office like this:

Tuesday Morning Confessional

The Tuesday Morning Confessional is going to be a regular installment on the blog every Tuesday - maybe not always in the morning, but always on Tuesday. I feel like I need to add this special section to the blog, because, quite frankly - I need a place to vent. And what better place to do it, right? Well, at least I hope so - please don't run away! :)

So, believe it or not, I feel like a loser some days. Everyone does, right? Please tell me I'm right! And yesterday was one of those days. Since Brad and I have moved to Shelby, we've had a lot of great experiences and met a lot of wonderful people - and we're getting the chance to live out our dreams and teach our daughter that life isn't built upon the amount of material things you acquire (check out more at the Homegrown Living blog). However, some days just get you down.

Reasons I feel like a loser:

* I'm the owner of a portrait photography business, but feel like I should be so much more
* I still can't figure out what I want to be when I grow up - yes, I love what I do, but I'm still soul searching
* I haven't had a pedicure in a million years - my little piggies need some TLC (can I get an amen!)
* Lately I feel like I'm talking to universe here - really....not one comment? You know I love comments on this blog - but none, nada, zilch. Hellooooooo.....anyone out there?

Ahoy Matey! | Children's Party Photography Brenham, TX

When my little family moved out to the Brenham area last summer, I could have never imagined all the great things that were in store for us. We have done so much more with extended family since we moved, and we feel so blessed! About a month ago, I received a birthday invitation in the mail from my cousin in law Bobbi Jo for her son Brazos' first birthday. I immediately wanted to RSVP because she is super crafty and I knew that this party would be a show stopper! Well, my thoughts were correct - this little pirate has the craftiest mommy in town :)

When I asked how long it took to plan this party - Bobbi Jo said she starting planning when Brazos was born - and you can tell!

Little Baby's First Year | Industry, TX Child & Family Photographer

It's amazing how fast a year flies by. New parents trying to wing it, finally getting in the groove of a routine, just for it all to change overnight. There are so many "firsts" that are celebrated and you never realize how much you can love someone until you hold your child for the first time. I remember photographing this little guy when he was just a few days new - affectionately known as "little baby"

The Gross Family | New Ulm, TX Family Photography

March winds, April showers - that's how the saying goes, right? Well, why in the world were there 25+ mile an hour winds in February? A couple of weeks ago, I was commissioned to photograph the Gross Family in New Ulm. The family matriarchs were celebrating their 50th Anniversary, so this was a special occasion. But when I woke up that morning, the wind was howling and blowing so strong! Being an on-location photographer, the weather is our greatest enemy, but it's our job to learn to deal with it so that we can provide our client with the best images possible. I did a lot praying before this session - and apparently, those prayers were answered :) Here are some of my favorite shots from the day. Enjoy!

Happy Hump Day everyone! It's been a while since my last post, but I have two new sessions that I'm excited to share with you. Today I'm excited because Professional Photographers of America (PPA) just launched a new video to help inform consumers on why it's important to hire a professional for capturing special events in your life. I'm so proud to be a member of such a prestigious group and be associated with some phenomenal photographers. They have paved the way for people like me who have decided to make photography a career and to excel at it.

Keepers of the spirit of people | Brenham, TX Portrait Photographer

Rainy, cold, miserable weather....I've never seen or described San Antonio that way before in my 33 years (did I really just type 33 - wow, I'm old!), but that is what it was like earlier this week when I attended Imaging USA, hosted by the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). But bad weather or good, wild horses couldn't have pulled me away from the amazing classes and speakers that I got to experience. I'm so thankful to belong to an industry that is so determined to make us the best we can be at our craft. And where else can you go to a convention where the speakers Love. Their. Job! One of the most emotional classes I went to was presented by Storey Wilkins, an award winning Master Photographer whose speciality is weddings. I was brought to tears at her class - and of course Brad rolled his eyes at me. I want to be like her when I grow up! She has an amazing quote that is so true: "We are the keepers of the spirit of people". I love this quote because that is what Homegrown Photography is ultimately trying to achieve with each session. I want to be able to capture the true spirit of people.

So have you ever wondered, why Homegrown? How in the world did I come up with the name Homegrown Photography? Homegrown is who I am. Raised by a Hungarian grandmother and an Italian grandfather who built their life around farming, I learned that the best things in life are homegrown. Whether it be the tomatoes that they farmed, the friends they had, the good times or the memories that I have of them. Looking back, I'm so thankful for the summers working in the field and the unique experiences I had on the farm. Little did I know, these were the things that would make me who I am today. New Year, New Opportunities | Fayetteville, TX Photographer

January has always been one of my favorite months. It's as if all my screw ups and mistakes from the previous year are wiped clean and I get to start fresh with a new year. I'm very excited about 2011 and the opportunities that it will bring. This month, my calendar is jam packed with a ton of educational workshops that I will be attending - and most anticipated is the Imaging USA convention that's being held in San Antonio this year. Imaging USA is put on by the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and is the biggest event photographers around the globe look forward to every year!

Homegrown Photography is proud to announce that it will be attending ALL the WEDDING workshops! That's right, 2011 will be the year that Homegrown Photography will officially offer Wedding Photography services. If you read my Facebook post yesterday, I mentioned that I have the pleasure of partnering with The Shelby Inn Healing and Retreat Center here in Shelby, TX for their photography needs. The new owners are looking forward to hosting many weddings & receptions this year! They will be attending the Bridal Extravaganza this weekend at the George R. Brown Convention Center. I'm so excited to see how many brides will fall in love with the little town of Shelby and choose to have their dream wedding here!

The Christmas season brings back memories of years past and the special traditions that are shared. This year my family is going to enjoy a white Christmas in Breckenridge, CO. We're so excited, but of course it won't be the same not being at home. We have assured Addyson that Santa will know that she's going to be in Colorado on Christmas and will make sure to visit her there. We're hoping to make some great memories that will stay with us forever.

Another one of my favorite things are my awesome clients! Seriously, it is because of all of YOU that my dream of being a photographer has come true. It is because of YOU that I get to develop new relationships and friends - and I get to capture memories that your family will treasure for a lifetime.

Is it just me or is this month on fast forward? Life has certainly been flying be for me lately and I've

been falling behind in blog posts. The weekend before Thanksgiving I got to meet a really cute couple from Carmine that was enjoying life with their new little man Parker.

They decided to meet over at The Shelby for their photo session. Suzanne was one of my favorite clients - I puffy heart her! She brought items for wardrobe changes, was open for all types of posing ideas - and she wins the award for the fastest order placed - EVER!

Take better family pictures this holiday season | Austin County, TX Portrait Photographer

With Thanksgiving right around the corner and Christmas knocking on the door, everyone will be pulling out their cameras to take pictures of relatives they haven't seen all year and what a better way to make family memories! But how would you like a few tips to help make your pictures even better? The following are 5 tips that will hopefully help you create some great pictures this year.

#1 – Turn off the flash! The flash that comes on cameras should be outlawed, really. They cause those devil red eyes, horrible shadows and it’s just totally unflattering. Use the natural light that streams through your living room window or go outside when the light is warm and lovely. Just remember, flash = bad!

#2 – Find the light

The best light can be found in the morning before 11am and in the evening after 4pm. These times can vary depending on the season, in summer the evening time will be later. The light at these times is nice and not harsh. Sometimes you can’t help taking pictures at high noon, so if that’s the case, look for shade. Shade is your friend, as long as you have a bright open sky in front of your subject. Make sure to have your subject positioned on the edge of the shade. The reflection from the sky will brighten your subjects face and give great catchlights. Catchlights are the twinkle in their eyes that make your subject come alive in their pictures.

#3 – Be mindful of the background

What sets a really great picture apart from an everyday snapshot is the background. Creating interest with textures on the side of a barn or under a majestic old oak tree can really make your pictures something to cherish. Be careful when you are posing family or children so that branches do not appear to be coming out of their heads or that your dog isn’t in the background making a present in the yard. Another trick to use is pulling your subject several feet away from the background so that the background is slightly blurred, and your family is in focus. What I mean by this is…don’t have your family right up against the background (such as a house, barn, etc), but instead, have them move up towards the camera about 10 ft or so. The background will still be there, but the focus will be on the family. (p.s. - there is a cemetery in the background here...but you would never know if I didn't tell you)

#4 – Get on their level

Whether you’re taking pictures of your toddler or your teenager, get on the same level or plane as they are on. If they are sitting on the ground, don’t take your shot from up above, get down on the ground so you’re at the same level. You will be pleasantly surprised at how that change of height can really make an impact on your final product.

#5 – Composition

The way that you set up your picture in the view finder of your camera can really make a huge difference in the quality of your final picture. At some point in your life, your Aunt Nelda took a picture of you and your husband, but it wasn’t a close up of just you and your husband, instead, the both of you were just a small speck in the picture that included her entire living room and random other people in the background. Paying attention to framing your subjects inside the camera is key. If your camera doesn’t zoom, use the manual zoom – your feet!

Well, I hope this helps you think about things a little differently the next time you pick up your camera this holiday season. Make memories that will be cherished for generations!

The Kitchen That Could - Part One

Back in May of this year I said goodbye forever to my kitchen in Houston so that I could live in the country in the 1860's farmhouse that Brad and I have been remodeling for 20 years. Just kidding, it's only been like 2 years...but it dang sure feels like 20 years! Here's a look back at the kitchen when we first started tackling it many moons ago...it was in rough shape. The kitchen was in a part of the house were the roof had been leaking for a long time and it needed our help B-A-D!

And take a look at the "padding" we found when we pulled up the flooring....check out the dates too!

I never knew that Lane Bryant was around in those days! :)

Anyway, sorry about the trip down memory lane, but the unfinished kitchen in our country home has been a huge source of frustration. You see, trying to cook in that kitchen is like camping...seriously. I have a 2 burner hot plate and a microwave to work with. (sorry, cleaning THIS thing is just not high on my priorities these days)

But now I have this!

Yes, our refrigerator is in there and we have a utility sink...so running water is a big plus, but still, everything is everywhere and trying to cook the smallest thing is a huge undertaking.

Don't ask...not sure how a banjo, guitar and a box of booze got crammed in the kitchen either!

So a couple of weeks ago we decided it's now or never and we decided come hell or high water, this kitchen was going to get finished by Thanksgiving! I wanted to be able to bake in my kitchen for Christmas dangit! So we successfully got our cabinets, new stove and a dishwasher. Now, anyone who's a relative or a friend of the family and has ever visited this house before the remodel, knows that there has never been a Voelkel woman with the luxury of a DISHWASHER in this house unless of course, it's the kind with 2 hands and a heartbeat. So I am over the moon to know that I will be THE FIRST Voelkel woman to be able to use a dishwasher!

This past weekend my step dad came out to help Brad install the cabinets and stove. And thank goodness for my step dad who recommended the layout that I wanted for this kitchen...even though our prior measurements determined that it wouldn't work. Guess we don't know how to use a tape measure too well? :)

With the new layout, we have tons of room, so much that we have a surprise addition that will make you say - holy moly that was a great idea!

On Monday we went to Ikea and spent a good part of the day there. By the end of the day, my dogs were barking, my brain was mush and we had some pretty awesome stuff. We decided to use their butcher block counter tops. I LOVE the look of it and think it will look awesome with the farmhouse feel that we're going for. We also got a pretty neat light fixture too...but you'll have to wait and see that once we reveal the surprise addition!

Yesterday we got busy doing a little customization on our cabinets. When we purchased them from Home Depot, they were your average run of the mill oak cabinets, nothing fancy. But thanks to our friend Beverly down the road, the owner of The Round Top Farmhouses, she gave us a really cool idea to save money and give them a more custom look. We purchased a sheet of beadboard and cut it into pieces that fit inside the inset of the cabinet and secured them with some liquid nail and tah-dah!!!

Pretty snazzy huh? All we have to left to do now is to caulk and paint them.

We've been agonizing over the color for a while now, but we finally agreed on black cabinets and we're going to try to tackle that today and tomorrow. That's the progress report for now...stay tuned for more updates this weekend or early next week!

This past weekend was the Holiday Mini Sessions at The Shelby. It's been really dry in Shelby, there's a burn ban in effect and wouldn't you know...10 minutes before our 9am session was supposed to start, the sky opened up and down came the rain! But no fear, the rain only lasted a few minutes and the lovely sun came out to play.

Are these two cute or what? Kari is the owner at Bad Habitz Jewelry, so of course I knew her accessories would not disappoint. They pulled their wardrobe together fabulously!

This is an FYI for future clients...take Kari and Bradley's lead...they got an A+! Don't wear clothes that aren't you...you want your portraits to tell the story about YOU, not the family that walks around wearing the same shirt and pants - lame! :)

This shot below has got to be my favorite of the day...I can hear Barry White singing in the background..."Let's Get It On" ....wait a minute, please don't get it on!

Country Girls Will Survive! | Shelby, TX Photographer

When Brad and I moved to the country, we knew we were leaving behind a lot of the things that were so readily available to us - Target, grocery stores, REALLY good restaurants, just to name a few. Now don't get me wrong...there are some good restaurants here, but we miss some of our most favorites and now they're just places we go for very special occasions - when we're in the big city! We both LOVE mexican food and we can pretty much size up a restaurant by the type of salsa that they serve. So since we're so far away from good salsa, I make my own - and you can too!

Now if any of you know me, you know I blog stalk the Pioneer Woman. You're scratching your head, wondering who one earth the Pioneer Woman is right? Well, she's Ree Drummond, an awesome woman from the city who married a rancher and has lived to tell about it! She writes about cooking, photography, ranch/country life and homeschooling. She's actually become so popular with her cooking, that she wrote a cookbook The Pioneer Woman Cooks - Recipes From An Accidental Country Girl and it came out last December.

Can you imagine how excited I was when I found out that she was going to be having a book signing in HOUSTON! Poor Brad...I drug him and Addyson with me.

He was overcome by the enormous amount of estrogen in the room, but he survived and now he's glad that I am making some of her recipes!

I love this book and recently, I thought I had lost it or someone stole it and I was sick about it...but luckily, we found it and all was right with the world again!

One of my favorite recipes of hers is Restaurant Style Salsa. This recipe isn't in her book, but it's on her blog and it's my #1 go-to recipe for salsa. So, in true Pioneer Woman fashion, I've photo-blogged step by step instructions for you - so here we go!

Here are the main players:

Some items not shown are: jalapeno (optional), sugar and lime. Yeah, since the grocery store is such a long haul for me these days, I just had to make due with lemon...and it worked just fine!

Start by chopping 1/4 cup of onion. Then put 2 cans of Rotel and 1 can of whole peeled tomatoes into your blender or food processor. Now this is where you can change the heat of your salsa without using jalapeno. My crazy husband picked up the Habanero Rotel and it was really hot, so if you want to add jalapeno, I'd recommend using the plain jane original Rotel.

Next, add the 1/4 cup of onions and spices (1/4 tsp cumin, 1/4 tsp sugar and 1/4 tsp salt). Then you'll want to add 1 clove of garlic. Or, if you're like me, you can add 1/2 tsp of the ready made minced garlic in the jar :)

Then add in your cilantro. I used 1/2 cup, but you can add more to suit your personal taste.

Then squeeze in the juice of 1 lime or in my case, 1 lemon. Now, just pulse your blender or food processor 7-8 times or more depending on how chunky you like your salsa....and that's it! Make sure to taste your salsa with a chip to see if you need to add more salt or any other ingredients to make it to your liking. Once you're done, please refrigerate for at least an hour before serving so that all the flavors can mix together. Enjoy!

1 can (28 oz) Whole Tomatoes with juice
2 cans (10oz) Rotel (dice tomatoes & green chilies)
1/4 C chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced (or 1/2 tsp of jar minced garlic)

1/4 tsp each (salt, sugar, ground cumin)
1/2 C cilantro
Juice of one small lime

The little town of La Grange is probably the most widely known as the headquarters for the Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, however, I would have to disagree! Yesterday afternoon our little family decided to visit The Jersey Barnyard. We've traveled past this place several times during our comings and goings back and forth between going to see Texas artists at Swiss Alp Dance Hall, shopping at the awesome little boutiques on the square and of course, getting our fix of the best Kolaches in the world from Weikel's Bakery. So yesterday we decided to stop and check it out....and we are SO glad we did! We decided to take the guided tour and it did not disappoint - in fact, I may have talked Brad into adding some of these barnyard animals to our family!

The guided tour allowed the kids and parents to feed and pet many of the animals. From the miniature horse named Midnight to the goats, rabbits and chickens.

Then the excitement came when we got to meet the baby calves and actually bottle feed them. Addyson's little calf sure did get mad when his milk ran out...he tried to plow through the fence!

Next on the tour was the hayride to the dairy processing center. The hayride was actually pretty long, so it was really nice to relax and take in the scenery. Their farm sits on right at 900 acres and it's been a working dairy for the last 100 years.

We made a pit stop along the way during the hayride...and that was to meet this hunk of burnin love! This dude weighed in at a whopping 600LBS! Holy moly!

We finally got to go into the milking center where the heifers line up and are hooked up to the milking pumps. And then - what I had been waiting for the entire time....we got to try milking a cow for ourselves! I was a pro... I wonder if they're hiring?? :)

Did you know that Jersey cows produce milk with the highest milk fat content and that is why Blue Bell only uses milk from Jersey cows for their ice cream. The higher milk fat content makes it the creamiest! AND, you know Belle from those Blue Bell commercials? Yeah, she lives on the farm...she's a celebrity around those parts....

She wasn't there yesterday though...I think she was out getting her tail washed and a hoof-icure!

2011 High School Senior Reps | Cypress, TX Senior Photographer

Over the past couple of months, if you've paid any attention to my blog or Facebook, you know that I had a campaign for 2011 High School Senior Reps. Well, I had fabulous entries from Cy-Fair ISD. Me and my crew met up with the girls and their moms in Brenham for their photo shoot. The day was a little overcast, but it was absolutely perfect and we came away from the shoot with some awesome images. Thanks again Jaree and Brooke for your fabulous smiles and styles! And thanks to their mom's for being great sports during this whole thing. Rain, Rain Go Away

As I was driving to this session, the sky was dark and ominous and I was praying for a break. Lord, just please give me a break - let the rain stay away long enough for this photo session to finish and then let the sky open up. Well, my prayer was half-answered and I'm so grateful! The session started off fine, but about halfway through, it poured down in sheets of rain! But no fear, Mom was a great sport and her little man loved playing in the rain. The day hadn't been ruined after all. Just look at some of my favorites from the day:

I wonder when the human race determined that in order to make a baby laugh, they have to whoop and holler, dance around like an idiot and talk like a moron? But wait, what if all this hollering and dancing STILL doesn’t make the baby laugh, what does this mean? I think it means that the baby is way smarter! This little guy was all smiles for about the first 15 minutes, but he had me, mom and dad and my assistant Brad (aka Hubby) dancing around and squealing like big jerks to get a smile – my poor neighbors, what must they think! J Thanks again Frankie and Holly for giving the world such a doll – it’s been so wonderful to watch him grow from THIS to this:

A Tale of Two Chairs

For those of you who follow Homegrown Photography on Facebook, you know that I posted a month or so ago about some chairs that I found on the roadside. They were being thrown out for trash and as soon as I came up on them, I slammed on the brakes and high-tailed back up the road to pick those puppies up. (For those of you who do not know about this and do not follow me on Facebook - shame on you! What are you waiting for?)

Today, Brad and I decided to bring those pitiful chairs back to life! We started by sanding with a pretty coarse grit sandpaper. You want to make sure to sand so that the paint adheres to the surface well.

After sanding, Addyson and I wiped down the chair with a damp cloth to get all the dust off so that it wouldn't leave a funky texture when the paint went on. (Pay no attention to the crazy hair!)

Then on this chair, we decided to use some spray paint that we picked up at HD. This has a satin finish, and it worked like a charm. I sure wish they would come out with a bigger variety of colors and I would never use regular paint again!

Now look at the difference between the chair before and after in this side by side shot - pretty snazzy!

Meanwhile - Daisy and Homer decided to start digging their way to China - too bad for Daisy...Homer already decided to lay down and take a break

On the next chair I wanted to use this turquoise ocean color...ain't it purty?

Unfortunately, it did not come in a spray can, so I had to brush it on. Thank goodness I keep Brad around, he finished it for me...AND decided that we should give it a shabby-chic finish like this. We only put one coat on and went back with the brush so that you could see the streak marks from the brush...he's so crafty I tell you!

While I had him sweating over there with the paint, I was tackling the cushions. These suckers had been sitting in the rain the day I got them and they were covered in nasty stains and a little mildew, so I wanted to get the fabric off and see if I could salvage the cushion. A tip on getting these old staples out is to use a flat-head screwdriver to pull up on the staple enough so that you can grip it with pliers. Then just pull those suckers out. Please use caution when using the screwdriver forcefully so that you don't stab your hand like I did :)

The good news was that the cushions were in really good condition, minus a little mildew, so I sprayed both the cushions with some Clorox Clean up spray. Not too heavy, just a light mist to kill any gross organisms that may be lurking there. Let that dry completly so you don't mess up your fabric - okay?

Now, cut your fabric so that you have about 3-4 inches around the perimeter of the seat. Then you get your husband to pretend like he is an upholstery guru. We used a regular staple gun and it worked pretty well. You want to make sure to pull the fabric pretty taut, but not to much that it distorts the cushion. The corners are a little tricky, so they may not have a professional finish. We treated the corners similar to the creases you would use when wrapping a present, but first we had to have an argument to figure out which one of us knew the right way to do it.

We are so very pleased with the way these turned out!

Bow chicka bow wow! Right? Bueller? Bueller?

So now these chairs are going to be members of my ever-growing prop collection...and those Senior Reps are going to get the honors of being the first clients to use these killer chairs! I cannot wait!

Before you go, I have to show you what my super duper talented husband made....LOOK

Yes, he made that bench...and painted it that cool turqouise color...you know you want one right? Well, he's going to start selling them soon...so if you want to get your hot hands on one, give us a shout! (By the way, that isn't some super funky cool white design on top of the seat...that's just dappled sunlight through the trees reflecting on there - didn't have alot of time for the perfect picture - don't hate lol)

This past Thursday started a new chapter in my life. For so long I've wanted to break away from the 20th floor coffin that I was trapped in - also called my office. You see, when I walked through the doors of my office, my soul died a little each day. Oh please don't get me wrong, it's a very great paycheck and benefits package, but in return, I slave away at a job that brings me no fulfillment, no joy, and keeps me from enjoying the best years of my life. It makes me feel guilty for taking time off to be at my daughter's school party or to take her to the doctor. Once we moved to Shelby, I knew that I had to find a way to break away from the drama, the butt-kissing coworkers and the two-faced management. This past Thursday - I finally did it - yes, I resigned from my job. But it didn't happen without a lot of doubt. I wasn't raised with the notion that you just quit your job with benefits if you don't have another "real" job lined up. No sir, what would people think? How will you pay your bills...how will you make it - you're going to ruin your life! Okay - but isn't my life already in ruins because of this job I hate? So I finally decided to override the voices in my head and I decided that I was going to follow my dreams. I've been wanting to put alot of my energy into making my photography business better and offer my clients better products. The only way I could do it was by diving in full-time - without sacrificing my time away from my family. So as of September 9, "Freebird" will be the theme of my life and I'm hoping my wings will soar. I have a ton of ideas running around in my head and new opportunities are on the horizon. Be on the look out for a new blog that will encompass all of my interests - Photography, Cooking and Country-Life. I hope my readers will enjoy following me on my journey and pick up some pretty neat information along the way. You see, life just isn't worth living if you can't share it with this sweet little lady

The Visitor by Brad Voelkel

Although some people may find it odd that we live next to a cemetery, you couldn’t ask for a better set of neighbors. They are quite, mind their own business and they never complain. Every day there are 20-25 cars that stop by there to pay their respects to friends and family.

There is one particular man who has caught my attention. He stops at the cemetery daily just before sunset and sometimes around lunch time. He is an older gentleman maybe in his 70’s. He drives an early 80’s Chevy van and he is always by himself. He sometimes sits in his van out front and never gets out. At first I thought he was a caretaker for the grounds there but I never saw him working. A couple of weeks ago I decided to watch him a little closer to see what he was actually doing.

On Monday this week I walked out on the front porch and I heard a trumpet play briefly and then stop, it was coming from the cemetery. I walked out into the yard but I didn’t see anything or anyone. I thought I was crazy or that the place was haunted and went back in. About 10 minutes later I went back outside and noticed this man’s van parked by the street. I stood out of sight and watched the man as he finished a beer, picked up a black bag, walked to his van and drove off. I thought to myself, great - the town drunk hangs out in the cemetery and drinks…

This evening just as we got home from eating supper this man’s van pulled back up to the cemetery. This time I stayed on the porch and watched him a little closer. He got out of his van with two beers and a black bag. I watched as he walked over to a gravesite and sat down. He opened a beer and sat it down on the grave and then he opened another. He sat for a minute talking while drinking his beer. About 10 minutes go by and then he starts to open his black bag. I thought to myself this must be where he keeps his beer…but to my surprise he pulls out an old trumpet. He plays a couple of short tunes like he was warming up or something. Then he put it back in the black bag and went back to his van, got in and sat with the door open. It looked like he was waiting for something or someone to get in. Another 10 minutes or so go by and he gets back out of the van with his trumpet and walked back to this grave and stood at attention. He picked up the trumpet and began to play Taps! When he was finished he saluted, turned, and in a marching manner walked back to his van and left.

This evening after I saw this, something told me that I should write this little story and share it with my friends and family. I said to myself, I am going to walk over to the cemetery that terrified me as a child at 9:45pm and see who this person was that this guy was playing Taps for. I got over to the grave which is covered in flowers and read the name and details off to Britney my wife who wrote them down for me.

Name: Emmett Lee Keith – 2nd Marine Div PFC Col 3 BNH - WWII
Born: 6/18/1921
Died: 6/19/1944 (today is June 19, 2010!!!)

He died the day after his birthday and at the young age of 23. As I moved flowers back from the headstone I noticed Emmet was also a Marine and a veteran of World War II. This young man may have given his life for this country but I am not 100% sure.

After talking to my parents who have lived in Shelby for the past 8-9 years they told me that this man has been visiting Mr. Keith’s grave for years although they were unaware that he did it daily.

I am not sure what drove me to write this story or to walk over to this young man’s grave in the middle of the night to find out that he died on this day 66 years ago. But a feeling of warmth surrounds me now knowing that I have given Mr. Keith some recognition - along with his faithful friend who visits him daily just to have a short conversation, share a beer and sign the day off with the most beautiful rendering of Taps that I have ever heard.

A little over a week ago, I had the pleasure of photographing the cutest baby boy. His daddy and my husband grew up together and they were quite the goofballs back then...actually, they're still goofballs - so not that much has changed over the years. After looking at the list, many of you may scratch your heads and think, what is a Standout or Gallery Wrap and what does that look like? So I thought to myself...why not post some pictures so you can get an idea of what you might want to put in your home.

I'll start with the Standout. This has a more contemporary feel to it. It's thick, lightweight, with finished black edges and doesn't require a frame - so it's ready to hang as soon as you get it!

Here's a close up of the side view - the one with the thinner edge is the 3/4" that I'm offering on the price list:

Next is the Float Wrap. The Float Wrap is a new concept that gives folks a more economical option if they like the look of a Gallery Wrap, but it's more budget friendly. The Float Wrap is created by wrapping the photographic print around padding and masonite to create a thin wrap with a raised, elegant look. Then attached to the back is a 3/4" gatorboard block that allows the Float Wrap to extend out from the wall. This block contains drilled holes so it's also ready to hang - no frames needed! Each Float Wrap is sprayed with a laminate that will help protect the print from scuffs, scratches and cracking and also provides UV light protection.

Next is the Gallery Wrap. With these, the actual photographic print is created and its emulsion is stripped, bonded to canvas and wrapped around a real wood frame. The Gallery Wrap also includes the laminate protection just like the Float Wrap.

So that's a good run down on the different options available for Wall Art from your photo session. You're probably looking at the list and wondering what a Widescreen Wallet is too. These come in handy for Senior pictures. They're a neat option for Seniors that allows a picture on the front AND back or you can have a collage of pictures on either side. And they are press-printed with a glossy finish.

The regular wallets are a little different that what you may be used to from past portrait packages. These wallets come 8 to a sheet and they have rounded corners - which definitely makes them feel more special than your average run of the mill wallets

And last but not least - hopefully you've had a chance to look at the bonus levels! If you're curious how that works, it's pretty simple. Once you reach the first price level of $150 - you will receive 2 complimentary 8x10s of one image (that's a $60 value!)...but wait, what if you reach the second price level of $225? Well, you'll receive the 2 complimentary 8x10s AND a Brag Book of all the images from your session! So what exactly does the Brag Book look like - it's a spiral bound book that holds 4x6 images from the session. You choose either black or white border.

Well, I hope this has cleared up any questions you may have had about the products I will now be offering and I hope it gets you excited to put some of your special homegrown photography on your walls...remember, I'm here to help you create YOUR history!

A new year...a new name!

Wow, what a year 2009 was! It was the year I started Homegrown Memories Photography and today marks my ONE YEAR anniversary!! I learned so much last year. Not only the technical stuff, but I learned how much work is involved in starting up a business....and making it work. I'm so grateful for all the clients I had in 2009, that trusted me to capture their families, their children, and those special times in their lives. To all of you, I say THANK YOU!

With all the information I gathered along the way this past year, I've decided to makes some changes to my business plan and policies. If you didn't already notice, a few things have changed on my WEBSITE and my blog. The biggest change would be the name. I wanted to keep the name, but make it simplier. SIMPLIFY is my new mantra for the new year - I don't need anything complicated :) So now, it's simply Homegrown Photography.

In 2009, I attended a few workshops, networked with some other photographers, did a TON of research, joined a few organizations and found out something shocking - I needed to change my pricing - in a hurry! According to the Professional Photographers Assoc. (PPA), I was actually losing money in 2009. Now if anyone knows anything about business, making a profit is pretty important - wouldn't you say? So with that in mind, I had to re-vamp my pricing.

Something you may notice with my new pricing is that the session fee does not include a CD with images anymore. I know alot of you prefer this and I'm sorry that I can no longer offer this. I've tossed and turned about this for the entire year I've been in business and I finally decided that it's the right thing to do - for both of us. You see, I'm not only a photographer, I'm an artist. When others look at my pictures, I want to know that what they're seeing is the great effort that I put into it. But if I don't have complete control of the printing, then who knows what the final product will look like. I use a state of the art lab that can print on several different types of paper - paper that has 100 year archival protection. If you take your CD to Walgreens to have them printed - I know that Walgreens is going to adjust the exposure and color so that it's in-line with their machines and its not going to turn out the way you thought it would. In the long run, I feel that this is the best way to ensure my clients will truly be receiving the highest quality prints possible. But you REALLY want some images to post on your Facebook account, right? Well, don't worry - Homegrown Photography now has a FB fan page. So once you have purchased your prints, I will post those pictures on FB and will tag them for you. Pretty nifty!

Last, but not least, I'm offering a REFERRAL program for clients to start receiving credits towards session fees and prints! Starting today, any clients that send a referral my way, will receive a $20 credit towards either a session fee or prints from a previous session. The fine print: the referral must book a session and be paid in full before referral credit is given.

When I was in seventh grade band class, I met a girl who played the flute. We ended up being BFF's...because of the fact that we sucked at clarinet (me) and flute (her) and we both happened to be last chair. Over the years, her 2 sisters became the sisters I never had - little did I know, I would have the honor of photographing her little sister Amanda at her wedding 19 years later. Hold on...is that possible that I was in 7th grade 19 YRS AGO??? Oh my gosh...I'm getting old.

Amanda and Adam had their wedding and reception at Cole's Country in Cypress. What a wonderful setting and you couldn't have asked for better weather (minus the mosquitoes)! Well, enough of my rambling about how old I have gotten - her are some sneak peeks from Amanda and Adam's perfect day....congratulations guys and best wishes on a wonderful life together!

Holiday Card Templates

What should I wear?

That's a question I get asked A-LOT when a client has an upcoming shoot. Of course, I want you or your family to look like YOU! I don't want your friends and family to look at the pictures and say...who is this? LOL However, we always want to make sure to look our best - so I have a few suggestions:

Don't be too matchy, matchy: Sometimes I think it's okay if you're going to be part of a very large group picture. It helps the eye focus on faces when the colors are the same. But when you match too much, let's face...it looks kind of *dorky*

Here's an example of how you can coordinate outfits...without matching and still look great!

Be COMFORTABLE! When I'm working with you or your family, I want you to be as comfortable and relaxed as possible. It helps us ensure that I will be able to capture the real you...

ACCESSORIZE! Every photographer LOVES clients that accessorize with scarfs, jewelry, hats, etc. So if you have a favorite scarf or chunky necklace - wear it!

First off...just let me thank the rain Gods for giving me and my clients a rain-free Saturday at The Shelby Inn. I was so afraid the holiday mini-sessions were going to be rained-out. However, it would have been nice if the sun Gods would have given me a little help...oh well...my trusty reflector (and my cute assistant - Thanks Brad!) got the job done!

Wow...time flies when it's 105 degrees outside! Seriously, are we living in Texas or on the Sun? I never say this, but I think I'm actually ready for the cold winter days again...the whole 12 that we get each year. It's been a while since I've actually posted some pictures, things have been so hectic for us this summer. Here are some random shots of Addyson and our dogs Daisy (little chi-weiner) and Homer (big weiner! LOL). Some exciting news - Brad's nephew and his wife just had a baby girl on Monday, so I'm waiting anxiously to get some newborn shots of her...hopefully I'll have some by the end of the month! Be on the look out for a precious carrot top...YES - red hair!

4th of July fun

It's been a long time since my last post and so many things have been going on. This past weekend, we enjoyed the 4th of July at my inlaws in the country. Addyson attended the parade that they have every year and she's showing off her beads that she collected from the loot of goodies thrown at the parade.

This weekend also marked our maiden voyage on my hubby's $400 prized possession. He put a lot of sweat, cussing and cash into this thing to get it going...but it ran great. There are still some bugs that need to be worked out, but for the most part, it's great.

Slip n' Slide = Officially Summertime!

June 4th marked the beginning of "Splash Day" at Addyson's school, so every Thursday they get to play with water toys on the playground (i.e. slip n slide). Yesterday, our neighbor's kids were playing on their slip n slide and Addyson kept watching them (even though her little pool was filled to the brim). At one point she started climbing the fence because she wanted to play. The nice girls had 2 of the slides and offered to let Addyson play with theirs for a little while. Here's the aftermath:

This morning I meet with the Parker kiddos. They were troopers getting up and ready so early on a Sunday morning. We met up at Cypress Top Historic Park. This was my first time out there since it was made into a park...and I LOVE IT! I'm pretty sure the kids liked it too...especially this one :)

Early this morning I drove out to Katy to take some photos of the Rodriguez family. Thanks to their new little one, they have a built in alarm clock...so we were able to get some good early morning sun for these photos. Well, it's Friday and I'm off today...but I'm not out having fun - I'm supervising the painters that are here. Yeah, you know, to make sure they're not screwing things up - like I would :)

Since I have all this free time on the computer I wanted to share a few silly photos of Addyson and her daddy. She loves "helping" her daddy mow the grass. I love it when she goes out there and helps him, it gets her out of my hair for at least a little while. Okay, 5 secs...what movie is that quote from? If you're like me, you've seen it 568 times...give up? It's Grease. That quote came to mind when I was editing these pictures of my niece Shelby. She's not a senior this year, but she graciously agreed to be my model for some senior pictures. These are just a few of the gorgeous shots I got. I hope she's pleased with the results. I can't wait to do her "real" senior pictures :)

This past Sunday, I signed up to attend a workshop put on by a local photo club and other sponsors. It was the 2nd annual Bluebonnet Trash The Dress workshop in Brenham, TX. This was the first workshop like this I've ever attended and all I can say is - where do I sign up for the next one?! Hotrod Hoedown, that is. This weekend we ventured out to New Caney to take a look at all the custom cars and rat rods. I'm glad we did because we all had a great time. Great cars and great entertainment....we can't wait to go to another one!

Welcome to my new blog!

Thanks so much for stopping by. The creation of my website and new blog was a huge undertaking and I'm so relieved to finally launch it. If you've taken a look at the website, there are still some bugs and typos, but I just couldn't wait to send out the notification.

On to other news - those of you in the Cy-Fair area who receive Cy-Fair Magazine (CFM) in your mail, please be on the look out for the new Spring issue. If you don't receive it in your mail, you can pick it up at local stores like Walgreens. My first job with CFM was in January and I did photos for the Autism in Cy-Fair article.
